Transparency

In an effort to be more transparent about the things I cover, I will use this page as a launchpad of links to articles on here regarding issues and topics where it may appear that I have a conflict of interest from comments I have made or opinions I hold.

In order to be completely honest and fair, this is vital to hold me accountable to you – the readers of my work. It may take me a while to build this up and start writing enough pieces here for certain issues I report on, but I will write more disclosures here.

More journalists need to hold themselves accountable to their reader base, and this is my best way of holding myself accountable to you. I bet this is “ill-advised” in the eyes of the professionals but I’m not in this to be a professional and make money – I am here to bring you information you should know.

If there is ever a piece you think I covered unfairly, this is also the perfect place for me to link to a post that will address your concerns.

I would love to have readers ask for more information about my background behind certain stories and then have this clear the air.

Here’s something I wrote as an 18-year-old kid that thought they knew something about something.

Unfortunately, I never really worked on this page or its related tab “Full Transparency.”

During my entire tenure at Mt. SAC I was paid $9,139 as a Perkins Tutor while holding the Editor-In-Chief position for my final year. This was further broken down into $3,705 for Fall 2021 and $5,434 for Spring 2022.

This was reported to the IRS and is the total amount of compensation I have received as a student journalist without counting de minimis fringe benefits of travel to NYC, DC, Long Beach, La Jolla and similar for journalism conferences and competitions. I have been offered favors, gifts, meals, and similar by sources but have declined. The only meal I was unable to pay for myself was a Denny’s French Toast Breakfast Combo that James Toma of West Covina paid for (during the course of an interview) the server put the bill closer to him and before I could split it or pay for both of us he paid.

I was offered the ability to be paid as a Perkins Tutor as a news editor in 2018 and could have been paid my entire tenure as a reporter at Mt. SAC but I felt very strongly against being paid in relation to reporting. I did hundreds of hours completely unpaid throughout my tenure so I do believe the compensation of $9,139 was earned if not more so. I only accepted a paid position (and only came back) due to a change in finances after my father passed.
